Your First Visit to a Psychiatrist: What to Expect

Quick answer

Here is what to expect at your first visit to a psychiatrist. A first psychiatry appointment is a private, 30–45 minute conversation about your symptoms, history, sleep, stress, health and goals. There are no painful tests. The psychiatrist explains what may be happening and discusses options, which may include counseling, lifestyle changes or medication. Bring any previous prescriptions and reports, and a list of questions.

Before the appointment

It's normal to feel nervous. Write down what you've been experiencing, when it started and what makes it better or worse. Bring a list of current medicines, previous prescriptions and any medical reports. You can bring a family member or come alone, whichever feels more comfortable.

What happens during the consultation

The psychiatrist will ask about:

  • Your main concerns and how they affect daily life
  • Sleep, appetite, energy and concentration
  • Stressful events and relationships
  • Physical health, medicines, alcohol or substance use
  • Family history of mental health conditions
  • What you hope to get from treatment

There are no right or wrong answers. Be as open as you can, because this helps the psychiatrist understand you accurately. Everything you share is confidential.

At the end of the first visit

You'll get an explanation of what may be going on and a proposed plan. This may include counseling, lifestyle steps, tests to rule out physical causes, or medication. You're encouraged to ask questions and share your preferences. Nothing is forced on you.

Questions you can ask

  • What do you think is causing my symptoms?
  • What are my treatment options?
  • How long will treatment take?
  • What side effects should I watch for?
  • What should I do if I feel worse?

Common myths

  • "Only 'mad' people see psychiatrists." Most visits are for common problems like stress, anxiety, sleep and low mood.
  • "They'll give me heavy medicines immediately." Treatment is discussed with you, and many people start with counseling.
  • "Everyone will find out." Your consultation and records are confidential.
