When to seek help
What you should know
Many people wait years before seeing a psychiatrist because they worry about stigma or lifelong medicines. In reality, most common conditions such as depression and anxiety respond well to treatment, and many people need medication only for a limited period.
At Chetas, every plan is built around you. Dr. Sharma explains your options, including therapy-only approaches where suitable, and involves family only if you want them involved.
How treatment works at Chetas
- Detailed assessmentA 30–45 minute private consultation covering symptoms, history, sleep, stress and physical health.
- Clear diagnosisYou get a plain-language explanation of what is happening and why, using standard ICD-11 / DSM-5 criteria.
- Personal treatment planCounseling, medication, or both, chosen with you. Doses start low and are reviewed carefully.
- Follow-up & recoveryRegular reviews track progress, manage side effects and plan how and when to taper medicines.
What we help with
Most modern antidepressants and mood stabilisers are not habit-forming. A small group of sleep and anxiety medicines can be, which is why they are prescribed for short periods and reviewed closely.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?+
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS + MD Psychiatry) who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medicines. A psychologist provides assessments and talk therapy but does not prescribe. At Chetas you can access both.
How long does depression treatment take?+
Many people notice improvement within 2–6 weeks of starting treatment. Medicines are usually continued for 6–12 months after you feel well to prevent relapse, then tapered under supervision.
Will I need medicines for life?+
Usually not. Most people take medicines for a defined period. Long-term treatment is mainly needed for some conditions such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, and even then the goal is a full, normal life.
Can I bring a family member to the consultation?+
Yes, if you wish. You can also see Dr. Sharma alone first and decide later whether to involve family.
Is the consultation confidential?+
Yes. Your details and records are strictly confidential and are not shared without your consent, except where the law requires it for your safety.
